Chovat Hatalmidim: Message to Teachers and Parents (02)

Rashi explains that the word "Hinuch" (Education) in the passage, "built a house and did not dedicate (Hanacho) it" (Deuteronomy 20:5) derives from the word, "beginning". It goes without saying, however, that not every usage of the word "beginning" relates to Hinuch. For example:

  • "Begins with negativity and ends with praise" (Gemara Pesahim 116., in relation to the Passover Haggada). Obviously, this does not mean "Educate with negativity..."
  • The Sanhedrin "begin (deliberations) from one of the side members" (Gemara Sanhedrin 32.). Again, this does not mean "educate from one of the side members..."

Rashi elaborates on Genesis 14:14 that "Hanichav" (his disciples) means that Abraham "educated them to perform mitzvot, with the root of the word referring to a person or tool beginning to perform a service in which they will engage in the long term. Similarly, 'educate (hanoch) the youth', 'dedication (hanukat) of the altar', 'dedication (hanukat) of the Temple'".
